Many people nowadays wear gemstones as jewellery with or without astrological advice. While buying they try to buy the original and not compromise on quality. But only a few people know or care that the gemstones need maintenance in order to keep on giving their optimum results. Most of the people usually put gemstones once in their fingers or in a pendent and then forget about them altogether whereas they should make it a routine to take care of their gemstones on a regular basis otherwise the gemstones they are wearing may lose the effects after a certain period of time and accordingly the benefits associated with the gemstones may start reducing in numbers and quantum with the passage of time. Gemstones are recognized for their beauty, durability and value. You've probably heard the classic phrase, "A Diamond is Forever." That, unfortunately, isn't always true. Depending on the gem, they can break, crack, melt, tarnish or wear away.

With a bit of common sense and care, you can easily keep the gem stones in pristine condition for a very long time. Learn what causes damage to your gems. Gem stones vary considerably in hardness, toughness and reaction to heat, light and acid. Because gemstones are actually minerals derived from the earth, they range in color, texture and hardness. Let me first start with the fact that gemstones are basically of two types when it comes to durability or their lifespan. Ruby, Sapphires, Emerald, Hessonite and Cat’s Eye fall under the first category which have a very long lifespan whereas Pearl and Red Coral fall under the second category which have shorter lifespan and so they need to be replaced after some years depending upon their quality.

Starting with the first group which is a transparent group also, as we wear these gemstones and start using them, layers of greasy material start depositing on their surfaces due to combined action of some oils, lubricants, greasy materials, dust and some other things that we every now and then come in contact with. Such deposits of impurities start getting thicker and thicker with the passage of time and a time comes when they start blocking the path of Ultraviolet rays that a gemstone receives from its corresponding planet. The rays are unable to pass through these impurities and hence they do not enter our body which is the sole purpose of wearing gemstones. Think twice before putting gems in an ultrasonic cleaner. Diamonds and rubies and sapphires will be fine but many other gems may not be: when in doubt, leave it out.

Diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and other single-crystal gems can be cleaned with a touch of ammonia in water to remove all films and add extra sparkle. Repeating this process once a month is generally sufficient in most of the cases unless you are into something which involves dealing with greasy materials more than usual in which case you may need to repeat the above mentioned process every couple of weeks to make sure that your gemstones are in good condition to perform.Since many prized gem stones will be set in jewelry, make sure to remove your rings and necklaces when doing anything that involves chemicals.

Moving on to the next group of gemstones also known as the Opaque group, the kind of care you need to take in their case is very much different from the first group of gemstones. The reason why these materials need more care than transparent gemstones is that these materials are essentially rocks, not crystals of a single mineral. Opaque gemstones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, malachite, require special care. Organic gems like pearls, coral, and amber should only be wiped clean with a moist cloth. Due to their organic nature, these gems are both soft and porous. Be careful about chemicals in hairspray, cosmetics, or perfume: they can, over time, damage pearls in particular.. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner and never use ammonia or any chemical solution.. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb chemicals, even soap, and they may build up inside the stone and discolor it. Pearl and Red Coral are not hard gemstones and they erode away with the action of Water, Detergents, Sweat and certain other things. So the first thing you need to do is to keep them away from water and especially detergents as the action of detergents can decrease the lifespan of these gemstones considerablym before you wash your hands or do something that involves the action of fluids and detergents.

Formation of greasy deposits is not a big issue in this case as the outermost surfaces of these gemstones constantly and continuously keep on vanishing and so the deposits also go away with them. But not much is actually required to do in case of these gemstones as they keep on eroding and new and fresh skin continuously keeps on appearing. So what you need to do in case of these gemstones is to keep them away from the action of excessive fluids and detergents. Doing this would prolong their lifespan and you would need to replace them less often.

These are a few simple but very effective methods that you should use for proper maintenance of the gemstones that you are wearing. Doing the things mentioned above would ensure that your gemstones keep on working to their optimum and have the longest possible lifespan.
